A device, used in evaporation pan measurements, that provides an undisturbed water surface and support for the hook gauge. The National Weather Service model consists of a brass cylinder, 8 in. High and 3. 5 in. In diameter, mounted over a hole in a triangular galvanized iron base that is provided with leveling screws.
Industry:Weather
A device that makes a record (written or by other means) of observations of a meteorological quantity.
Industry:Weather
A device that uses a photoelectric cell to measure electromagnetic radiation in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Industry:Weather
A device used on certain types of instruments to prevent unwanted radiation from biasing the measurement of a quantity. The radiation shield for a thermometer, for example, usually consists of a short length of brightly polished metal tubing that encloses the thermosensitive element. The tubing is usually perforated or opened at the bottom to allow proper ventilation and is sometimes artificially ventilated, as in the Assmann psychrometer.
Industry:Weather
A device that automatically and continuously records the water equivalent of snow on a given surface as a function of time. A small sample of a radioactive salt is placed in the ground in a lead-shielded collimator that directs a beam of radioactive particles vertically upward. A Geiger–Müller counting system (located above the snow level) measures the amount of depletion of radiation caused by the presence of the snow.
Industry:Weather
A device (similar to a potometer) for measuring transpiration. It consists of a vessel containing soil in which one or more plants are rooted and sealed so that water can escape only by transpiration from the plant.
Industry:Weather
A device (tube or pipe) that allows one to determine the elevation of hydraulic head in an aquifer at a given point.
Industry:Weather
A device for measuring the field strength of sferics.
Industry:Weather
A device for streamflow measurement, using the rotation rate of a propeller as an indicator of flow velocity.
Industry:Weather
A device (similar to a phytometer) for measuring transpiration. It consists of a small vessel containing water and sealed so that the only escape of moisture is by transpiration from a leaf, twig, or small plant with its cut end inserted in the water.
