An identification number issued by the tax authorities to taxpayers. Each country has its own system. For example, in some countries, tax numbers are only assigned to legal persons, whereas natural persons use their personal identification number as a tax number. In other countries, all persons are assigned a dedicated tax number. In countries where taxes are levied not just at national (or federal) level, but also at local level (by states or municipalities), multiple tax numbers may be issued.
