Lydian stone

A black, flinty stone, such as a silicified shale or slate, or a variety of quartz allied to chert or jasper, whose smoothed surface was formerly used to test the purity or fineness of alloys of gold and silver by comparing the streak left on the stone when rubbed by the metal with that made by an alloy of predetermined composition.
