nickel carbonyl

A volatile compound of nickel, Ni(CO)4, formed by passing carbon monoxide over the heated metal. The compound is decomposed into nickel and carbon monoxide by further heating. It is used on a large scale in industry for the production of nickel from its ores by the Mond process.
