A professional who directs personnel in maintenance-of-way department and coordinates maintenance and repair activities with other functions of street-railway system. Responsibilities include:

• Issues instructions to personnel engaged in removal of snow or other obstruction from tracks, and construction, maintenance, and repair of roadway, bridges, and other structures.
• Dispatches crews of workers and equipment during emergencies, such as breakdowns, derailments, floods, and landslides, to make necessary repairs for restoration of service.
• Inspects equipment along way, periodically, to ascertain that it is maintained according to standards.
• Directs personnel engaged in maintaining time and work records.
