A gelatinous material extracted from the walls of some red algae, mainly species of Gelidium and Gracilaria. Agar is used as a support medium, when supplemented by appropriate buffers and/or nutrients and other ingredients, for cultures of microrganisms and tissues, electrophoresis, etc.
